Make Jazz Not War!
@ Comfest 2022
Saturday, June 25, 8:00 pm
Goodale Street Stage
Being a Citizen Artist doesn’t get you a lot of gigs. I can name most of them from Poets Against War to “Debbie Does Armageddon” at a ‘90s Hiroshima/Nagasaki memorial. In the last few years, being a Citizen Artist actually became a hindrance to getting gigs. Again. A lot of places stopped calling back. I understood. We didn’t stop.
And now we’ve landed a great spot at Comfest! Our best festival spot ever! Saturday night @ 8:00. Now I’m not saying Citizen Artist content got us the spot, but I think it’s a good bet. For years, we’ve given some very activist performances at Comfest. As we became Make Jazz Not War!, we got even more activist. Our application to Comfest emphasized this.
When I answered the question about what our show would be, I was specific. I told them about “F.O.P.”, our exploration of the history of policing in America. I told them about “We Are Not Going Away”, our defiant anthem of diversity and inclusivity. “My Country Song (no mask)”, a satirical indictment of MAGA selfishness. And more like this. Apparently they liked it. I told them we’d do “The Repression Will Not Be Televised”, but it’s changing into “The Counter-Revolution Will Be Televised”. A new piece, “On America’s Moral Decay and the No Consequences Consequences” addresses the trickle down effect of corruption and crime.
Our theme song has new music you can dance to! And we’re updating “Compared to What”!
So, I’m not saying for sure we got this plum spot on Saturday night instead of our usual mid-afternoon swelter because we embrace and embody Comfest principles. But I think it’s a good bet.
Make Jazz Not War! @ Comfest 2022 features Michael Vander Does, Roger Hines, Brett Burleson, and The Governor.
